Case Studies » ATS Helps Get Large Pulp & Paper Manufacturer Certified – Prevents Possible Downtime
Problem
One of the world's leading manufacturers of tissue, pulp, paper, packaging, building products and related chemicals was faced with the possibility of component failure due to the condition of parts found in their Electrical & Instrumental storeroom. The part’s protective static bags were compromised - opened, ripped or absent completely. Also, many of the parts had not been issued for over ten years based on inventory records and service reports but still had an installed base at one of the manufacturer’s facilities. These parts, when installed in critical applications, could cause system downtime and production loss.
Solution
Advanced Technology Services (ATS) immediately presented their findings to the manufacturer’s storeroom and maintenance management. In an effort to reduce the risk of component failure, ATS recommended sending the parts to their state-of-the art service center for test certification. Coordinating with the manufacturer’s storeroom and maintenance, parts to be sent for test certification were identified based on the following criteria:
Usage
Cost
Installed Base
Material Condition of Parts
Quantity on Hand
Bottom Line
With diligent coordination and communication between the manufacturer’s purchasing, storeroom and shipping and receiving departments as well as the ATS on-site repair parts coordinator, customer service, repair technicians and shipping and receiving, the program has been highly successful.
- 113 parts were sent to ATS for test certification with 83 passing and 12 failing requiring repairs
- 18 parts failed test certification and were beyond economic repair (BER)
- All parts are now covered under ATS’ 4-year shelf warranty and 1 year in-service warranty
- All parts have now been repackaged in new static bags with temperature, humidity and shock stickers
- Compromised parts are now immediately identifiable by storeroom and maintenance personnel
- Parts for critical equipment are now more reliable
“The test certify program initiated by ATS has increased the reliability of critical parts issued from the storeroom, which is instrumental to mill operations.”
